|        Back to latest Flower of the Week   Staphylea colchica The Caucasian bladder-nut is more often remarked for its popping green bladders in summer than its ravishing little flowers in spring. The pure-white panicles have a sparkling crystalline quality and a scent that has allured & intrigued me for years: creamy, spicy, somehow tropical. I think I've finally pinned it down as gardenia, which as a tropical member of the coffee family can hardly be connected.I grew this bush from seed; in 25-odd years it has topped 25 feet. This year it is three or four weeks ahead of schedule - but what isn't?   Back to previous Flower of the Week
